What is the human spirit made of? That is a really huge question isn’t it. There have been some recent shows of courage that have made me wonder whether the ordinary people were getting back into power.

You might object to that statement and think that the power has always been with the little folk. Not so in my view. Although I must say there haven’t been that many centuries that I can think of where the people had the power.

They had it every now and then for a short while such as the French Revolution, although whether the crowds weren’t just manipulated for political purpose is a question that I have had. However, I’m not a great historian. In fact I’m no historian. I can only reflect on the last hundred or so years.

Especially the last forty or so years, that I have been following world politics it has been very obvious that politicians on the whole are maneuvered into powerful positions by the people behind the throne.

It’s so bad, people in the developed world hardly go to the polls anymore. The turnout for the EU elections were pathetic. Nobody cares because they know their vote makes no difference to the outcome. A rare exception has been the last US election with Obama.

Even in the UK with Labour falling apart, supposedly the people’s party, people are wondering what the least harmful option beside Labour could be and the Tories don’t come up as first choice.

People are powerless in more than just their civic rights. The average person earns peanuts while the top echelon of big companies take home huge pay packages, even during the recession.

But it’s more the political arena where there have been some shifts and where there seems to be a reawakening of the people power. As an example of this the uprising in Iran has been a very strong indicator.

Whether this will achieve the results hoped for is another question entirely. What is surely promising though is that Obama has been quiet on the issue. Possibly a wait and see approach. Or maybe for once the US is not going to interfere and allow the people of Iran their voice.

I had had hopes that Burma’s Buddhist monks might have started a greater stand for political rights in 2007. But regrettably the people did not take hold of their human spirit sufficiently to make a difference.

Whether the people of Iran can is another question. Let’s hope that if the elections were rigged, and one doesn’t know this for sure, and the people gather to dispute this, that the human spirit will have shown itself in its true colours and the outcome will celebrates this.

I set myself this challenge or goal to work through 30 days of self-praise. It’s supposed to take 30 days for a new habit to become part of you. I have to admit that it took three days for me to drop off the program.

That would not rate as a hugely successful experiment, well not in my books anyway. Whatever happened?

Life happened. I just got too busy to even think of this 30 day project of mine.

How many times have you had this happen to you? You set up a goal which looks really easy to do and then you bomb out within a few days.

I really thought that praising myself for thirty days was not going to be difficult. I would think of something good I had done during the day. consider a personal victory or two, pat myself on the back and move on.

It should have taken a minute or two, at the most, of my time. Yet I couldn’t even spend this amount on myself. Makes me think of all the articles and books I’ve read where the advice is to treat yourself. I’ve always wondered why one would need to spell that out. Surely we all treat ourselves. Not it seems. Or at least not in my case.

So what to do here. Start over again I think. But instead of trying to write an article a day on this topic, I’m going to go back to old habits, in the hope they work better for me, and write my daily pat on the back in my paper based diary. Creating a written journal of this trip might just be the solution.

Anybody else set themselves a 30 day goal and bombed out within three days? Tell me about it. Go on. It’ll make me feel better! Oh wait. It’s self-praise time. I’m praising myself that I’m going to give it another go. That sounds better than kicking myself for giving up on a project within three days.

It’s all in the words.

Reading the newspapers about David Carradine’s death in a Bangkok hotel makes me ponder about why the media seems to think that all details whether good or as in this case gory really need to be made public.

Is it really necessary for us to hear how he was tide up and whatever the speculations might be as to the cause of his death. It was the same when Heath Ledger died. The news was full of details that should really have been left unsaid.

Is this really what we are all about? It is always said that the media prints what the people want to read. So does that mean that we as people want to loiter around these kinds of personal tragedies and we the people want to know all the horrible details?

I find that hard to believe. I certainly feel that in this case, as with Ledger, the boundaries of decency have been overstepped. We really don’t need to know any further than the fact that this fine actor died. How, is between him and his god or belief system. None of our business.

The world is not a place where we need to know everybody’s secrets especially when the people being discussed are dead. Some things are really best left alone and untold. Surely we can let that happen, allowing folk to take those secrets into the grave.

In fact, I don’t even think it’s good for us to know those kinds of sordid details. It somehow puts us at the same level. It’s almost by having to share this information it’s as if we would want to behave in a similar way.

Not really! It takes the ‘wanting to see the gruesome details of a car wreck’ to a whole new level. I can’t imagine we would want to stoop so low. So let’s call on the media to show some respect to people.

Some things really don’t need to get shared. The way that David Carradine died is one of those. And I see that his ex-wife has to jump on the bandwagon and get some time in the headlines. Whatever for.

Shall we try and get some moral code back? First one. Let’s allow everybody some dignity.

It’s always surprising how much pain we absorb in our lives. We just sit there taking it all in. Day after day. One of those pains for some people is article writing. But as every internet marketer knows, it’s a compulsory chore.

Internet marketing depends on having good content as well as constant fresh content. It’s something of a tread mill. If you don’t write, then there’s no traffic. And you need that traffic to increase your list, your popularity, your guru status and all the other requirements for a successful online business.

This is something I have experienced myself. Often. Every time I have a gap in posting to my blog, as for instance last week, my traffic figures plummet. It’s as if I have never written before. Groan. But then I’ve neglected this blog for so long that I can’t really complain that there’s little movement.

That’s the other thing isn’t it. You have to be at it all the time. You can’t just give it a year’s break as I did with this blog. Sure I posted a Blog Carnival once a month. And that got some folk visiting. But I didn’t write anything myself. It was like the ground opened and swallowed up the blog. Never to be seen again.

And the other bit of a nuisance was that Google decided to knock one of my page ranks off. Yip. Nasty bots. That took me three months of writing to get back up again.

Every blogger has my sympathy. You see, the big thing is that I really enjoy writing. So writing articles is not necessarily a huge chore for me. Yet even I find it a burden sometimes. Now imagine how bad it is for folk who don’t really like writing.

It’s like trying to become a swimming sensation, but you hate water. Or it’s equivalent to being a bus driver but you are scared of traffic. Or what about an astronaut but your have a fear of heights. I could go on and on!

Yet, it’s the one thing you really have to do in the internet business. You have to have content on your site. And you have to have decent stuff for people to read and enjoy and think you know what you are talking about.

With all that pain and agony of trying to write, when you absolutely hate it, wouldn’t it be a good idea to take the pain away?

So here’s the deal. Why not try an article writing service? Never occurred to you has it? Try this one. The articles are good. How do I know? Because I’m the writer for this service. If you go back and read this blog, or if you’ve been reading it for a while you will know that I’m not bad!

And now for some unashamed self-promotion - well, I think I’m actually reasonably good. In fact I think I could provide a great article writing service. What do you think?

But don’t take my word for it. Go here and try out five articles for free. One a day. Then check out the ridiculous low monthly subscription and you might just want to get rid of the burden of article writing forever. Just as a hint. It will cost you less per month than a Tall Latte at Starbucks. Just one.

So what are you still lurking around here for. Get thee over there!

This is a huge Carnival. Read and enjoy the varied entries.

Many people will have heard of Richard Branson, the maverick businessman who amassed a fortune of about £3 billion in his short life time. A fair number will also know who Barack Obama or Oprah Winfrey are.

Then there are the famous footballers, actresses and actors and of course just the bland career celebrities who we know by name and even know what they are up to.

Many of these folk are known only because they have made an inordinate amount of money.

Now how many of us will know the names of the top scientists currently producing serious new research, the best teachers and doctors around, the most humanitarian people and the greatest artists and composers currently delivering their magic?

Not that many. Yet the western world makes heroes out of ’successful’ people. And to be a successful person you have to have a fair amount of money in the bank. Nothing else seems to count.

It would be a good idea to bring some balance into the famous people line-up. Why not give those others some time in the spotlight. Why only believe we have succeeded if the bank balance boils over.

Surely success may be counted in other ways? Making a small difference by looking after endangered animals counts as being a success in my eyes. Creating beautiful art should be called successful as well.

Singing, dancing, writing, painting, sculpting surely being good at these activities may be considered successful? Why does it always have to be money. An artist is only successful if he can sell his art at exorbitant prices.

But an artist is surely successful if somebody wants to hang his work on a wall because they love to look at it and not only because somebody is prepared to part with a large sum of money for it?

The western world seems to have such a skewed perspective on success. It’s only money or the control of money that translates into being considered a success. It’s a real pity because lots of money is surely the least meaningful in our lives.

Which is why the people who have it always want to make so much more. Madonna with all her money still goes on tour to make even more. All these hyper successful online marketers who have made their supposed millions still push their next product down your throat.

It’s never enough.

We need to rethink our idea of success so that every person can claim their rightful place in the success hall of fame. We are all successful in one way or another. In fact we could celebrate successes every day whether it’s planting new seedlings or performing an act of kindness to somebody.

My sister brought up an autistic child who now works a regular job as a baker, drives a car and in general lives a healthy and happy life. I think her life has been a huge success.

What have you done that could be entered into the hall of fame for success? Much, I’m sure of it. So make your own hall of fame and pin up those successes on the wall. Celebrate them for the achievements they are.

Just to add to this as a footer, coincidentally Fast Company has come out with a list of 100 most creative people in business and they have some folk on there because of their talents and abilites rather than because they are wealthy. Good one. Check the list here.

There was no post reflecting on my second day of self-praise on the actual day. I’m playing catch-up. I just didn’t have time to reflect on this challenge or to write about what I had or hadn’t done about it.

Our daily trials and tribulations take our minds and focus away from what is often more important. I forgot the self-praise challenge I set myself.  And that’s on day two with 28 to go. Oh my!

But then I suppose it was also good that I forgot because I didn’t have time to run myself down either! Maybe there’s a lesson there. When we don’t have time for self-reflection we also don’t have time for self-criticism.

Maybe that is something to remember when we hit those periods of self-absorption and angst. We just have too much time to think and mull over stuff. It ends up being an opportunity to wallow around in all sorts of emotional stale bath water.

Once that sort of milling around in dark emotions takes hold it is incredibly difficult to get out of it and get back into a lighter side of life. Maybe a possible anti-depressent isn’t medication but action. Doing stuff, getting involved, joining society with whatever activity might amuse and entertain you.

Get too busy for emotional trauma. That might work a lot better than medication.

The long and lonely road

By Anja Merret · Comments (0)

It’s good to read some success stories every now and then. I’ve been following Chris Guillebeau for a short while now. His story is truly fascinating in that it’s all about following your own road to success.

Those kinds of stories are always inspiring. We often watch them with a smidgen of envy. We wish we could do our own thing just like this person. Wouldn’t we just be so much happier.

Yet when one looks at the successes of this writer and adventurer there are also many hurdles he has had to overcome and things didn’t always look as positively as they do now.

It’s been hard work and tenacity that has made this person reach some quite stunning achievements. Not only that but it’s taken a few years to get where he is. Read his story on his blog and get his feed. It’s worth reading about his life and physical travels.

Besides hard work and persistence the other characteristic that distinguishes him from other people, and this is just my opinion here, is that he is able to step outside of his comfort zone.

Almost all of us work hard and persist in maintaining our living standards and striving towards our goals. Yet we don’t reach the same heights as this person.  I think the great distinguisher is the amount of risk we are prepared to take.

When we are young and still growing up we generally face life fairly fearlessly. We happily walk on cliff edges, jump into pools from a tree, try a new hobby, play a new sport, take a backpack trip through Asia and many more times we totally step out of our comfort zone.

We seem to lose this ability as soon as we step over the 20 year threshold. Sometimes it lasts into our early thirties but not much further. It’s the risk averseness that puts our dreams to rest and kills off lofty ideals.

Pity isn’t it. We limit ourselves and our experiences by being afraid. Afraid of what? Maybe if we find out what we are so scared off we can get rid of it and re-instate our dreams? Fear of failure? Could it be just that?

My thirty days of self-praise kicked off yesterday. As with all new things, it was really easy to stick with it. Every bit of mind talk got re-directed and re-written to become self-praise.

It ended up being quite fun. Driving along from my monthly shop which had cost what I had expected but of course much more than I had hoped for I stopped  just in time from chastising myself about the perceived overspend.

Instead I spent the next few seconds praising myself over a jolly good shopping expedition. After all I hadn’t backed off shopping when I realised I had to park at the far corner which could only mean many many shoppers to have to contend with.

Not discouraged by masses of people it ended up being quite comfortable after all. No major trolley accidents, no having to fight over the last bunch of fresh artichoke or cut price chicken thighs.

In fact, there was no stress to be had. Even the check-out was speedy. So what could I complain about? Nothing. Besides that I stuck to my shopping list and kept to a frugal load of groceries.

Wasn’t my fault that the tab got to be about what I thought it would be and that I didn’t manage to save half of the final bill!  No miracles today then.

Maybe the whole experience, which could have been one of those nasty bun-fight type patches in ones life, was so easy because I walked into the supermarket expecting to be a star.

I was riding in on my white stallion. Ready and able to conquer all in my way. I was the hero of Saturday shopping to end all heros.  I walked in with a smile on my face.

It worked. So we’ll see how I go on day two. So far so good.

The question is of course whether the momentum will disappear and I will forget my quest and end up getting back into old and bad habits. But that’s why I am forcing myself to write about it every day. A reminder.

So how are you doing with this? Have you decided to give it a go? Or are you just going to sit back and observe me making an idiot of myself. Oh no. You can’t do that surely? Come and join up. It’s free and it’s definitely going to be good for you.

See you all in the morning.

PS. Be good to yourself. Get a load of self-praise going. Go on. You deserve it.
