What makes us freeze to the spot

Nike’s slogan, Just do It, is a very powerful call to action. It’s call to action relates to of course buying their products. But it also has a second meaning to it which is what makes a slogan a good one. Those double meanings.
The second call to action is trying to encourage folk out there to do something, to take action, to go for it. And this is where the whole problem lies right now. It’s the general inactivity of folk. That reluctance to do it.
What made me think of the Nike slogan was a friend’s brand new course for new or not so new internet marketers who might want to consider the affiliate marketing model as their online business.
One of the main reasons why one should consider his course, and this is the interesting part, is that he has a module to his course which is specifically designed to ensure that students of his course: Just do It!
There are many courses available for the internet marketer. Yet very few internet marketers actually make a huge living, or any living at all. And the most basic problem to that non performance is because they Just don’t do It.
The main reason for that inaction is the fact that they lack self-confidence to start on a course of action in affiliate marketing that they feel could be considered intrusive on the other person. It might even be aggressive.
They don’t want to appear to be pushing their product. They can’t set up a sales page because nobody would want to buy or read or sign up. This is the mind talk that is happening all the time.
They feel too shy, too nervous, too lacking in sales experience! Too too too. The list goes on. By the time they have thought through all the reasons why somebody wouldn’t want to buy from them, they have lost all enthusiasm for affiliate or any type of marketing.
And they freeze up. They are unable to act. All good intentions of building that huge empire, making all that passive income and having huge amounts of money drop into their inbox while they sit on the beach are lost the moment they need to do something.
So finding a course where your tutor pushes you into taking that first step, just doing it, making that first sale – that course could be worth buying, couldn’t it. Something that gets you past the frozen to the spot stage and into the Just doing It way of life.
3 incredibly easy ways to learn How to write Articles for maximum Effect
Posted by: | CommentsRead, watch and listen and do yourself is the winning combination that this Multi-media eCourse offers you. We want to make sure you have every chance to learn how to write articles for maximum effect.
What we have here, and it’s team work with Andrew Rondeau and myself, is a product that offers a whole range of different learning opportunities. For those who prefer to read, there’s a comprehensive book. For the more visual people the videos will be of special interest. And then you do it yourself!
Why would we put so much effort into an eCourse that teaches you how to write articles? It’s because the written word is back with a vengeance. You can do nothing online unless you can string some words together into compelling copy.
That applies to whatever you want to do. Write an article for your blog? Definitely. Post an article to an article directory to promote your blog and products you are trying to sell? Of course.
What about commenting on other blogs and on forums, setting up a page on Facebook? Yes, most definitely. Presentations? LinkedIn profiles? Twitter tweets, quick comments on social bookmarked sites such as Digg? Yes, yes, yes!
You need to be able to write. What the telephone killed for a while, that skill of writing beautiful letters, has come back with the online world demanding you write to express yourself and to communicate with people.
It doesn’t matter whether you have a blog, are an internet marketer selling products, building a profile online to help your offline career prospects or just having fun with your friends on Facebook or MySpace. You have to be able to write.
Does it always have to be an article? Of course not. But the same principles apply to whatever format you will be writing in. This eCourse presents 21 chapters that cover a wide variety of topics dealing with the written word. And 16 videos show you visually how to go about it.
Why not try 6 chapters to see what it’s about? Sign up for the free Extract. There’s also a bonus waiting for you if you do this now. So go for it. It’s not going to cost you anything, and you will most definitely learn something.

Why would you want to sabotage yourself
Posted by: | CommentsGood question. It is amazing how often we actually undermine our own goals by paying attention to our own limiting beliefs. We pay more attention to the voice in our head that tells us what we can’t do than listening to when the voice tells us what we can do.
What are the kinds of excuses and hurdles we place in our own way so that we don’t stand a chance of succeeding? In fact some of these hurdles are so high, we don’t even try out for them. We give up before we start.
Probably the more common limiting belief we dredge up is the fact that we don’t have enough money. We don’t have money for the college education we need, the capital for the business venture, the money for the wedding, or the back-up fund for going on our own. And so much more.
Then there are the ones where we find very innovative reasons why we shouldn’t try to reach a new goal. You want to learn a new language so you decide on Mandarin. Then you see the alphabet involved and you give up because you can’t draw.
What about playing an instrument? Piano is a lovely one to try out. You look at your hands and decide they are too small. You’ll never be able to play like a concert pianist with such small hands. You wouldn’t be able to reach the cords. So put that dream to bed.
Then there are the arbitrary external factors that we find to use as an excuse why a particular goal is not actually a good idea to try for. You see a great job advertised and one that you could do well and it also looks as if it could be a great advancement for you. Oh, but you can’t apply for that. It’s far too far away. There are no buses never mind trains and you would spend far too much time traveling. No go. Let’s not even apply.
You want to run your first competitive race? You have been training, more or less. But every race that comes up it rains. Oh dear. Can’t run in the rain. You might trip and fall. Injuries are bad. And so the story goes on in your head.
Sound familiar?
What makes us sabotage ourselves? Mostly it boils down to the fact that we have no self-confidence in our own abilities. Our fear of failure and of making a fool of ourselves stop us from trying new things.
Our internal voice talks us out of trying. We find many reasons and excuses why we will never achieve our goals. And we allow that voice to talk us out of trying because it seems so much easier to give up than to try something new. Especially if we already anticipate that we will fail at it.
Never a truer saying: We are our own worst enemies! You know what I mean?
If you don’t succeed at first, try again
Posted by: | CommentsI set myself this challenge or goal to work through 30 days of self-praise. It’s supposed to take 30 days for a new habit to become part of you. I have to admit that it took three days for me to drop off the program.
That would not rate as a hugely successful experiment, well not in my books anyway. Whatever happened?
Life happened. I just got too busy to even think of this 30 day project of mine.
How many times have you had this happen to you? You set up a goal which looks really easy to do and then you bomb out within a few days.
I really thought that praising myself for thirty days was not going to be difficult. I would think of something good I had done during the day. consider a personal victory or two, pat myself on the back and move on.
It should have taken a minute or two, at the most, of my time. Yet I couldn’t even spend this amount on myself. Makes me think of all the articles and books I’ve read where the advice is to treat yourself. I’ve always wondered why one would need to spell that out. Surely we all treat ourselves. Not it seems. Or at least not in my case.
So what to do here. Start over again I think. But instead of trying to write an article a day on this topic, I’m going to go back to old habits, in the hope they work better for me, and write my daily pat on the back in my paper based diary. Creating a written journal of this trip might just be the solution.
Anybody else set themselves a 30 day goal and bombed out within three days? Tell me about it. Go on. It’ll make me feel better! Oh wait. It’s self-praise time. I’m praising myself that I’m going to give it another go. That sounds better than kicking myself for giving up on a project within three days.
It’s all in the words.
Some things we need not know
Posted by: | CommentsReading the newspapers about David Carradine’s death in a Bangkok hotel makes me ponder about why the media seems to think that all details whether good or as in this case gory really need to be made public.
Is it really necessary for us to hear how he was tide up and whatever the speculations might be as to the cause of his death. It was the same when Heath Ledger died. The news was full of details that should really have been left unsaid.
Is this really what we are all about? It is always said that the media prints what the people want to read. So does that mean that we as people want to loiter around these kinds of personal tragedies and we the people want to know all the horrible details?
I find that hard to believe. I certainly feel that in this case, as with Ledger, the boundaries of decency have been overstepped. We really don’t need to know any further than the fact that this fine actor died. How, is between him and his god or belief system. None of our business.
The world is not a place where we need to know everybody’s secrets especially when the people being discussed are dead. Some things are really best left alone and untold. Surely we can let that happen, allowing folk to take those secrets into the grave.
In fact, I don’t even think it’s good for us to know those kinds of sordid details. It somehow puts us at the same level. It’s almost by having to share this information it’s as if we would want to behave in a similar way.
Not really! It takes the ‘wanting to see the gruesome details of a car wreck’ to a whole new level. I can’t imagine we would want to stoop so low. So let’s call on the media to show some respect to people.
Some things really don’t need to get shared. The way that David Carradine died is one of those. And I see that his ex-wife has to jump on the bandwagon and get some time in the headlines. Whatever for.
Shall we try and get some moral code back? First one. Let’s allow everybody some dignity.

We need to redefine what we mean by success
Posted by: | CommentsMany people will have heard of Richard Branson, the maverick businessman who amassed a fortune of about £3 billion in his short life time. A fair number will also know who Barack Obama or Oprah Winfrey are.
Then there are the famous footballers, actresses and actors and of course just the bland career celebrities who we know by name and even know what they are up to.
Many of these folk are known only because they have made an inordinate amount of money.
Now how many of us will know the names of the top scientists currently producing serious new research, the best teachers and doctors around, the most humanitarian people and the greatest artists and composers currently delivering their magic?
Not that many. Yet the western world makes heroes out of ‘successful’ people. And to be a successful person you have to have a fair amount of money in the bank. Nothing else seems to count.
It would be a good idea to bring some balance into the famous people line-up. Why not give those others some time in the spotlight. Why only believe we have succeeded if the bank balance boils over.
Surely success may be counted in other ways? Making a small difference by looking after endangered animals counts as being a success in my eyes. Creating beautiful art should be called successful as well.
Singing, dancing, writing, painting, sculpting surely being good at these activities may be considered successful? Why does it always have to be money. An artist is only successful if he can sell his art at exorbitant prices.
But an artist is surely successful if somebody wants to hang his work on a wall because they love to look at it and not only because somebody is prepared to part with a large sum of money for it?
The western world seems to have such a skewed perspective on success. It’s only money or the control of money that translates into being considered a success. It’s a real pity because lots of money is surely the least meaningful in our lives.
Which is why the people who have it always want to make so much more. Madonna with all her money still goes on tour to make even more. All these hyper successful online marketers who have made their supposed millions still push their next product down your throat.
It’s never enough.
We need to rethink our idea of success so that every person can claim their rightful place in the success hall of fame. We are all successful in one way or another. In fact we could celebrate successes every day whether it’s planting new seedlings or performing an act of kindness to somebody.
My sister brought up an autistic child who now works a regular job as a baker, drives a car and in general lives a healthy and happy life. I think her life has been a huge success.
What have you done that could be entered into the hall of fame for success? Much, I’m sure of it. So make your own hall of fame and pin up those successes on the wall. Celebrate them for the achievements they are.
Just to add to this as a footer, coincidentally Fast Company has come out with a list of 100 most creative people in business and they have some folk on there because of their talents and abilites rather than because they are wealthy. Good one. Check the list here.
Day 1 of 30 days of self-praise
Posted by: | CommentsMy thirty days of self-praise kicked off yesterday. As with all new things, it was really easy to stick with it. Every bit of mind talk got re-directed and re-written to become self-praise.
It ended up being quite fun. Driving along from my monthly shop which had cost what I had expected but of course much more than I had hoped for I stopped just in time from chastising myself about the perceived overspend.
Instead I spent the next few seconds praising myself over a jolly good shopping expedition. After all I hadn’t backed off shopping when I realised I had to park at the far corner which could only mean many many shoppers to have to contend with.
Not discouraged by masses of people it ended up being quite comfortable after all. No major trolley accidents, no having to fight over the last bunch of fresh artichoke or cut price chicken thighs.
In fact, there was no stress to be had. Even the check-out was speedy. So what could I complain about? Nothing. Besides that I stuck to my shopping list and kept to a frugal load of groceries.
Wasn’t my fault that the tab got to be about what I thought it would be and that I didn’t manage to save half of the final bill! No miracles today then.
Maybe the whole experience, which could have been one of those nasty bun-fight type patches in ones life, was so easy because I walked into the supermarket expecting to be a star.
I was riding in on my white stallion. Ready and able to conquer all in my way. I was the hero of Saturday shopping to end all heros. I walked in with a smile on my face.
It worked. So we’ll see how I go on day two. So far so good.
The question is of course whether the momentum will disappear and I will forget my quest and end up getting back into old and bad habits. But that’s why I am forcing myself to write about it every day. A reminder.
So how are you doing with this? Have you decided to give it a go? Or are you just going to sit back and observe me making an idiot of myself. Oh no. You can’t do that surely? Come and join up. It’s free and it’s definitely going to be good for you.
See you all in the morning.
PS. Be good to yourself. Get a load of self-praise going. Go on. You deserve it.
Obama reaches out to Cuba
Posted by: | CommentsMany years ago a then boyfriend and I had a huge argument. In fact it was so big I remember it fully. One could say that it was over nothing. But in retrospect it was really all about a fundamentally different way of looking at the world.
The argument started off with the premise that things were either black or white. Were thoughts, situations or behaviour either right or wrong for eternity? Was that even possible. It went further of course as these sort of rolling arguments tend to do to cover political, religious and world views.
I was surprised at the time to find somebody who felt that opinions and positions would be set in concrete. Reading in the news today about Obama and his wanting to change the approach to Cuba makes me think of this argument.
Cuba has been enemy number one with the USA since Fidel Castro took over. Take one Obama and suddenly what was black against Cuba is now suddenly changing to grey.
Sure one can argue that Fidel Castro is semi-retired due to ill health and that his brother Raul is now running the show. But so far I haven’t seen brother dearest change too much in Cuba.
In fact Obama is going to change a lot with his more reconciliatory approach to world politics. All those enemies that were black listed before, especially by Bush who saw a terrorist behind every pillar, will start heading into grey terrain and hopefully eventually acquire white status.
It’s great to see the leader of the world power reach out a hand of friendship to countries. And wonderful to see that being done to supposed enemies of the state. With such leadership coming from the most powerful nation in the world, only good things can come.
What great news. Well done Obama. Holding out a hand in friendship is not a sign of weakness. It’s magnanimous and will contribute hugely to a more peaceful world. Good thing I never believed in irreversible situations. It would mean not having any hope for more peace and love in the world.
The instant pill to fix your health
Posted by: | CommentsNow you can pop one pill that helps lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, combats heart disease and even helps against strokes. It’s like a magic potion. Take one little pill, presumably this one isn’t going to be blue though, and all will be forgiven.
Well exactly, it’s all about the forgiving of sins isn’t it. With the pill you no longer need to care about what you eat or how much. And you certainly need have no further worries about your drinking or smoking. Then there’s the no exercise bit, also forgiven.
If you are a man you start popping this little bit of forgiveness at the age of 50 and for women at the age of 60.
It’s a really bizarre look at life. You don’t need to take responsibility for what you eat and drink, the poisons you put into your system and the couch potato existence you lead. No responsibility whatever. Just pop a pill.
I recently did a little experiment. I stuck to a vegan diet for three weeks. My blood pressure went from a top end of 140 to a top end 120. After I recovered from my amazement it took me a while to work out that the result was most probably related to the diet.
Speak to any dietitian and you will get the information you need to lower your cholesterol, reduce your chance of heart disease and combat high blood pressure and the possibility of a stroke.
All it requires is some self discipline. Stop eating so much. Stop eating so much rubbish food. An indication of the amount of rubbish we eat is that there is an entire aisle in the supermarket just for crisps and other snack foods.
At my local Sainsbury’s there’s almost more space allocated to bread, cakes and biscuits than to the entire fresh food section. Check it out at your supermarket how much space has been allocated to rubbish food. The supermarket is merely delivering on demand.
The choice is yours. Do you look after your body yourself or do you pop a pill for eternity. Do you hand over responsibility for your health to a pharmaceutical company or do you keep control yourself? What will it be.
