It’s always surprising how much pain we absorb in our lives. We just sit there taking it all in. Day after day. One of those pains for some people is article writing. But as every internet marketer knows, it’s a compulsory chore.

Internet marketing depends on having good content as well as constant fresh content. It’s something of a tread mill. If you don’t write, then there’s no traffic. And you need that traffic to increase your list, your popularity, your guru status and all the other requirements for a successful online business.

This is something I have experienced myself. Often. Every time I have a gap in posting to my blog, as for instance last week, my traffic figures plummet. It’s as if I have never written before. Groan. But then I’ve neglected this blog for so long that I can’t really complain that there’s little movement.

That’s the other thing isn’t it. You have to be at it all the time. You can’t just give it a year’s break as I did with this blog. Sure I posted a Blog Carnival once a month. And that got some folk visiting. But I didn’t write anything myself. It was like the ground opened and swallowed up the blog. Never to be seen again.

And the other bit of a nuisance was that Google decided to knock one of my page ranks off. Yip. Nasty bots. That took me three months of writing to get back up again.

Every blogger has my sympathy. You see, the big thing is that I really enjoy writing. So writing articles is not necessarily a huge chore for me. Yet even I find it a burden sometimes. Now imagine how bad it is for folk who don’t really like writing.

It’s like trying to become a swimming sensation, but you hate water. Or it’s equivalent to being a bus driver but you are scared of traffic. Or what about an astronaut but your have a fear of heights. I could go on and on!

Yet, it’s the one thing you really have to do in the internet business. You have to have content on your site. And you have to have decent stuff for people to read and enjoy and think you know what you are talking about.

With all that pain and agony of trying to write, when you absolutely hate it, wouldn’t it be a good idea to take the pain away?

So here’s the deal. Why not try an article writing service? Never occurred to you has it? Try this one. The articles are good. How do I know? Because I’m the writer for this service. If you go back and read this blog, or if you’ve been reading it for a while you will know that I’m not bad!

And now for some unashamed self-promotion – well, I think I’m actually reasonably good. In fact I think I could provide a great article writing service. What do you think?

But don’t take my word for it. Go here and try out five articles for free. One a day. Then check out the ridiculous low monthly subscription and you might just want to get rid of the burden of article writing forever. Just as a hint. It will cost you less per month than a Tall Latte at Starbucks. Just one.

So what are you still lurking around here for. Get thee over there!

All about selling yourself

Posted by: Anja Merret | Comments (2)

Gary Vaynerchuk is the essential modern business person for me. He is a one man show, more or less, and he epitomises what can be done as a single practitioner.  He earns huge sums of money selling his time and knowledge.

Sure, he has a few support people around such as a good video producer.  There’s probably also a techie lurking somewhere and a PA or two. But at the end of the day, it is Gary’s personal brand that makes the money for himself and his business.

One of the most essential skills one needs in this modern life is to be able to sell oneself. It’s totally essential if you are selling a service, or a piece of art you have created, or a widget you have invented, of if you want that first date with the love of your life and many more examples.

Everything in your life requires that you to sell yourself. It’s difficult for some people to sell a widget. But it is doubly difficult to effectively sell oneself. We have to be super confident that we are worth it. And most of us do not believe we are worth it!

This video is a fabulous example of how Gary sells himself. It’s selling yourself 101. Absolute classic. Watch and learn. In a few minutes of video you will learn how it’s done and watch a master at work.

Notice that he is not embarrassed. Not once.

You and I would be squirming around on our chairs. In our mind we are thinking that we couldn’t possibly be authoritative enough to write a book and then sit in front of a camera and tell the world that it is worth reading.

But he not only talks to us ordinary folks. He thinks his book is worth reading by CEO’s of huge companies. Those mainly pale males sitting in little ivory towers are advised by Gary that this books is essential reading!

But what is even more amazing is the fact that Gary delivers this message about how awesome his book is without once faltering. The entire message sounds as if he has just found this wonderful gem and everybody needs it and deserves it. It is totally authentic.

We can all learn a bit from this video. Watch it.

Remember it’s not only about business. It’s also how you present yourself to the partner of your dreams or how you interact with your friends, work colleagues, a stranger you meet.

In short the message is about selling yourself to other people every day of your life. How does he do it? By being totally and absolutely passionate about his topic.  Does that mean we need more passion in our lives? You bet.

Every two weeks I have the treat of playing bridge with my University of the Third Age (U3A) people. It’s a wonderful evening of fun, laughter and puzzling as we try and work out what to call and play next.

During our coffee break somebody asked me who was to blame for the recession we are in. Good question that. My plain and simple answer was: all of us. Or at least all of us with a mortgage, credit card, overdraft or a loan from our employer amongst many options of borrowing.

You could count the number of people without some form of borrowings on one hand, I would imagine. Even the wealthy tend to borrow more. In fact I always felt that the level of wealth you had was more an indication of how much you could borrow, than how much you actually owned outright.

Why are we to blame then? Isn’t it the fault of the government, the banks, the advertising industry, the sub-prime lenders, the insurance companies, the stock exchange traders, the traders selling short, the traders selling long, the congress, Government or the CEOs earning too much money and that’s just to kick-start the list.

Can you add to that? I’m sure you can think of a few yourself. There was a letter to Citibank on Huffington Post that complained that the writer’s parents in their 80’s were now being charged close on 15% interest on their credit cards even though these old folk had been responsible people with their money.

The question is, why would one use a credit card. The word in itself means you are getting credit. Why don’t her parents operate a debit card. That is you pay with the money you have. Besides that point, also remember that you only pay interest on your credit card when you have outstanding money and not if you pay on time.

So going back to the question, who is to blame for the recession, the answer surely is all of us. It’s we, the consumer. We bought into the hype of having everything now even if we could not afford it.

In the US we bought houses where we didn’t have to pay any installments for two years. After two years we suddenly couldn’t pay. What? Didn’t we get it? We had to pay at some time. It wasn’t as if we didn’t know. We just thought it would go away. The UK lenders also offer some strange options for home loans.

What about that maxed out credit card? Did you really need to have five pairs of jeans in your cupboard. Did your kid need that Nintendo or Wii gadget. It’s not just the sub-primers that we all look down on as being foolish people. It’s all of us with our credit cards, loans and mortgages who spend more than we earn.

A recent experience pointed this out again. I’m looking for a place to move to. I viewed a flat with two small rooms, tiny kitchen and bathroom and a patch of garden. The letting agent and I could barely walk in this space because the two adults living there with their baby had covered every possible inch/cm with stuff. There’s even a baby’s blown up swimming pool on the lounge floor. The amount of money that has been spent by this family on non-essential items is awe inspiring.

So whose fault is the recession then? It’s all of our fault. We did it. We brought it on. Our massive consumerism finally tipped over. There was just too much debt in the world. It had to fall apart. We just never worked it out that spending far in excess of what we could afford was not healthy for our financial well being. So now we are ill.

The cure? Pay off your debts and live within your means.

You will look at the five steps listed below and wonder how that could be all that is required to set up a successful business. You will think to yourself, what about money. How do I market the business. Where do I start with all of this. Surely it must be a lot more difficult than this.

The good news is that it isn’t actually. Everything else you can learn by reading books, searching the internet, getting in accountants, marketers and other advisors. Stick to the following few principles and you should be good to start your own business.

1) The supporter
Get close and enthusiastic support. Have a look at how many big businesses started with at least two people. Bill Gates had Paul Allen when they founded Microsoft. Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak for Apple. HP were Bill Hewlett and David Packard. Google had Sergey Brin and Larry Page. And there are many more.

There is a reason for this. You need support when starting a new venture. It can be really frightening trying to set up a business on your own. It could mean that you give up before you have a chance to make it. Most successful businesses have had to grow through some tough times. You need somebody who will be enthusiastic when you are ready to give up.

2) The team
Employ staff who share your vision. And if you employed staff who seemed to have shared your vision but eventually lose that enthusiasm, regrettably you will need to give them the pink slip. You cannot build a business with people who do not burn with the fire of enthusiasm for the product or service you are building.

3) The product/service
Decide on something that is unique. Customers will need and want to purchase this. It is not that important that you and your business partner know everything about the product or service. But it certainly helps. It helps to ensure that whoever supplies you or works on the product/service with you isn’t going to cheat you.

If you know you want to establish your own business but are not sure what to do, then have a look a trends. Watch such websites as TrendWatching or Springwise and follow the new stuff that is happening in the world. Adapt a product to fit in with a trend. Make sure to select something that gets your own enthusiasm bubbling over.

4) Be exceptional
Ensure that the product or service that you will be offering to your customers is exceptional. Do not waste your time producing a half baked offering. Your business will not last. Whatever you decide to offer has to be considered so good, that it is talked about. For further ideas on the concept of ‘exceptional’ check out Seth Godin.

5) Lead the project
Be prepared to take chances and make decisions to ensure that it happens. This is not the time to delegate. Ensure your team sees that you are prepared to lead and to make those awkward and tough decisions. They will follow no matter what.

What made me think of putting forward these points was an article I read. It’s by Josh Russell who offered a very good list of pointers for a web-app startup business. Although his points are set out differently to the above, they cover the same principles. Do it with a small team, be enthusiastic, do it well, be innovative and don’t rely on outside people to make it happen.

Jody presents The Trinity Project – Blog posted at The Trinity Project.

One of the key components to the Law of Attraction is the belief that by visualising a goal, this goal will manifest itself. Although I am fairly skeptical about the Law of Attraction, there is certainly some value to this statement.

We tend to limit ourselves because we think we are not capable of achieving a goal, not worthy of finding a loving relationship, not deserving of financial success or not able to obtain a University qualification, the list is endless of what we feel we cannot do. By the fact that we visualise a goal having been achieved, this limiting belief is overcome.

I think that we do not achieve to the maximum of our capacity because we talk ourselves out of it. Successful people might have moments of self-doubt, but on the whole they are convinced that their idea will make it and they will make good money pursuing that idea. They have solid self-belief in their capabilities. An outsider might even consider that they shouldn’t have that belief because they are not intelligent enough, don’t have enough knowledge, or not enough capital to invest in the development of the idea. How often are these outsiders proven wrong. Many times.

Yet for most of us, the list of our limiting beliefs far outweighs the list of the things we believe we can do and achieve. The list gets longer as we get older and we tend to focus our powerful thoughts on all of our mistakes and failures. As we get older, we tend to have less and less faith in ourselves. What is even worse, that added to that is society that supports that. Older people have to retire, they are banished to old age homes, their opinions do not count anymore, nobody considers them a consumer anymore, the list goes on.

Every one of these negative elements will add to the fact that as one gets older, our belief system becomes more and more negative and we believe that we cannot accomplish anything. However, is that really true? Some folks, in their 70s, 80s and even older, have achieved amazing things. They have been outstanding presidents of countries, they have finished marathons, they have won Nobel prizes, they have managed or even started huge business empires and many more examples.

What distinguishes these people from the you and I’s. The main thing is that they believed that they could do it. They did not allow anything to get in their way. Not their age, not any physical frailty, not any perception of society could stop them from achieving their goal. It doesn’t even occur to them to consider that their age could deter them.

If you find yourself, having grown older, not even anticipating that it would happen so quickly, suddenly facing a lonely retirement, a retirement without sufficient funds, or just a retirement that is too early for your active brain and healthy body. What are you going to do? Are you going to accept that the decline has set in? After all people are telling you this. Or are you going to say, move over world, here I come. I want another shot at a career, a new relationship or a goal to run a marathon or ride a bike from London to Brighton. You can do it, you just have to believe that can. It’s that simple. Believe in yourself. Take up the mantra of ‘I can do it’. It will allow you to achieve beyond your wildest dreams. Try it, you will surprise yourself!
Technorati Profile

There is an interesting theory that I read in an interview on a South African marketing site. The person being interviewed was the CEO of one of, if not, the biggest publishing house in SA. His theory was that oddballs would drive innovation and change, rather than the people in their power suits and branded sunglasses.

This CEO, Koos Bekker,  had been to Monte Carlo to attend the Ernst & Young and Rand Merchant Bank World Entrepreneur Awards Programme as the South African candidate. The winner of the award, for anybody dying to know, was a clown. Well not quite but close. It was Canada’s Cirque du Soleil founder and CEO, Guy Lalibert.

What Mr Bekker maintained though, and what really rang bells of ‘oh of course’, was that the entrepreneurs he met at the award ceremony were quite different in that some were small and inarticulate and some larger than life and obnoxious. But he felt they all had something in common and that was their burning ambition to prove something to the world.

That makes total sense. The people that make it in large capital letters, whether in the field of wealth, fame, science, humanitarian works or even those claiming to be highly infamous and many more fields of endeavour, are the ones that feel they have to be a bit of a mesiah. They need to show the world the best product, service, humanitarian effort or be the most famous or infamous.

Whether it’s somebody like Madonna for the fame, Nelson Mandela for the political achievement, Steve Jobs for Apple and technology, the Curries for Science or  the Wright brothers and their flying machines. These people have always wanted to prove a point, make a statement or show the world. They have done this even to the point of sacrificing their personal safety such as Mandela in prison, the Wright brothers falling out of the sky, Jobs getting fired from his own company,  or the Curries dying of cancer.

Possibly this overriding wish to be right in the invention, business idea, political thinking etc is what makes these people more successful in their chosen field. They do this better than others who might have the same good ideas, put in the required hard work, are passionate and single minded in their pursuit, but they just don’t get as far.

The undying wish to prove to the world that their invention, their ideas, their thinking is the most important in the world, pushes these people into the spot light. It makes them succeed beyond what one would image they are capable of taking their intellect, background, education etc into consideration.

See the story for a person called Richard Jones. He was just about destitute when he thought of his big idea. And he didn’t have much support or money to pursue this big idea. In fact he ended up sleeping in a tent on the roof of the warehouse where he had his small office, for five long months. He was the only one who thought that he might start a new online music revolution.

His friends laughed at him and told him that he should get a real job. Richard Jones continued to believe in his dream. He slaved away at his computer making the last of his student loan last as long as possible with a meagre diet of chick peas and rice. While he suffered sleepless nights and a terrible diet, he found it endlessly disheartening that nobody wanted to believe in his idea which he had started on as a computer science student at university.

It has taken him almost exactly four years, to realise his dream and to reap the benefits of his hard work and pain and suffering he had to go through. The music and social-networking site which he and his two partners set up, Last.FM has been bought by US entertainment giant CBS for a tidy sum of £141 million. Whoever said that hard work and patience didn’t pay?

Richard Jones’ idea was quite easy. It is a software application which searches through your music library and from this research evaluates the type of music you enjoy listening to. Then, by logging into the Last.FM site the users are able to stream music, according to their taste and listen while logged on.

To avoid copyright issues, users are not able to download the music. At the same time they are able to chat online to their friends or make new friends. A social network site with music as an added feature. Along the lines of the olden days where you used to congregate at a friend’s place to listen to ‘records’.

From very small beginnings of members from his university community, Last.FM now has over 15 million members in 200 countries and it claims to be the largest social music platform. It is easy to see that this could be possible.

Other examples of people who followed their vision, put in incredible amounts of hard work, and suffered various forms of hardship are Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google. Then there is Mark Zuckerberg who started Facebook. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim started YouTube in the back of a garage after they had been made redundant from PayPal, Steve Jobs and his partner Woyzek didn’t have it easy when starting Apple. The list goes on.

In all cases, the success came after hard work, self-belief, some pain and suffering for a few years and often some form of ridicule from their peers. And possibly, especially the YouTube guys, some surprise at the extent of the success.
