Where is your passion man

By Anja Merret

One of my favourite new celebrities is Gary Vee.  Gary is a combination marketer, entertainer, visionary, motivational speaker and social media proponent to give him just a few labels he might deserve.

He has just signed a multi book deal with HarperStudio. The question being asked is whether his in your face, loud, exuberant style of communication will translate into books. Watch some of his videos to get my meaning.

One of the personality traits that Gary has that I think make him the ‘celebrity’ that he is, is his outgoing nature. He is a natural speaker and communicator. He could be reciting the alphabet and it would sound like the best thing since sliced bread. In fact you feel like you should immediately go and buy, copy, Tweet, blog about the alphabet.

What is the magic component that makes this person so awesome and such a natural leader that people flock to follow him. Charisma? It’s certainly not outstanding looks or amazing command of the English language.

It’s probably not that easy to put a finger on what makes this person so immediately like-able and has given him such a celebrity status.

The one thing that jumps at me is his absolutely unbounded enthusiasm. No matter what he is talking about, he is vibrantly wonderfully in love with the topic.  He thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread. He can’t wait to tell you about it because he loves it so much.

Of course all the self-help gurus constantly tell you about Passion. Have passion, show passion, do passion. Whatever. It’s not easy to find something to be totally passionate about.

A day ago I watched a speaker get totally passionate about windmills. I suddenly thought that the topic of windmills was cool. I had never thought of it as any such thing before!

But if you really look around you how many passionate people do you meet every day? And how many topics are you totally passionate about that you would jump up and down and want to tell the whole world about it?

It’s not that many is it? You just don’t have that many things you are totally passionate about.

Maybe we all need to find a whole bunch of stuff we want to be passionate about.  I think it could provide for a whole lot of fun. Of course it might not make us into total celebrities. But we sure would have some laughs trying it out.

It is interesting that I ran into your post. I work for professional speaker Garrison Wynn and we “just” went through a similiar thought process both internally and with editors. Garrison just finished the final manuacript for his new book with McGraw-Hill due out this Fall. The current big question on everyones mind is,”Will Garrison’s passion, humor and straight forward (sometimes hard hitting) approach, translate into the written format. We all hope so and our editors have done a GREAT job. I agree that being passionate about something is infectious so I hope that passion, enthusiasm and humor DO translate well and that the reader will be able to catch some of the spirit. Great topic!

Great post. I love the idea about passion and how fun once you have the passion about something

I agree when it is hard to find something that you are totally passion about, but once you develop or having it, it will become something that you really like and enjoy doing it no matter how tired or difficult you are.
